About the Club

North Shore Jiu Jitsu is a surf-inspired BJJ club in the heart of Newquay, offering high-quality training in a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. Founded in 2014 by head coach Nick Tiscoe, a second-degree black belt under Kev Capel (Roger Gracie Academy), our roots trace back to Rio de Janeiro through one of the most respected lineages in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

While we’re proud of our heritage, what really defines us is our culture. We believe in training hard, staying humble, and supporting each other – whether you’re stepping on the mats for the first time or preparing for your next competition. We welcome all backgrounds, affiliations, and experience levels. From visiting surfers to committed locals, everyone adds something to the mix.

Classes are focused, consistent, and centred on technical growth, with most of our training in the kimono (Gi).

At North Shore, we see Jiu Jitsu as more than a martial art. It’s a way to challenge yourself, build confidence, and find your people.

Come for the training. Stay for the community.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting, control, and submission holds. Students learn techniques and skills to overcome an opponent – not brute strength. The aim is to figure out how to take your partner to the ground, move yours and their body into a dominant position, and apply a submission such as a choke or joint lock until they tap.

What makes BJJ special is that it works for everyone – unlike many other martial arts, a smaller person with better technique can beat a bigger person.

If you’re willing to show up and learn, you’ll make progress.
