Begin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at North Shore

Start where you are. We’ll meet you there.

Our adult beginner classes are designed for anyone aged 18+. No experience needed, no pressure to perform. Whether you’re here to try something new, get fit, or build confidence, our white belt classes will introduce you to the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a structured, welcoming environment.

Everyone on the mats started somewhere. Different coloured belts just mean more time and practice – and your journey can start today.

What to expect in a typical class

We’ll guide you through everything – from stepping onto the mat to trying your first roll.

Lining up: Take your shoes off, hop onto the mat, and line up with the group (most experienced at the front).

Warm up: Your coach will lead a gentle warm-up to get your body moving.

Technique: You’ll gather round as the coach demonstrates a move, then partner up with someone your size to practise it. Coaches will offer tips and encouragement.

Rolling: It’s friendly, safe and low-pressure. Fist-bump your partner to start, give it a go, and take it at your own pace.

Fitness & body type

You don’t need to be fit, strong or flexible to start. You’ll build strength and cardio as you go. We’ll match you with someone similar in size and experience so you can train safely and confidently.

All body types are welcome. We’re a mixed group – and proud of it.

Injury & safety

Injuries happen when people try to “win” rather than learn. You can reduce your injury risk by focusing on technique over strength, being respectful and communicative with your partner. You’ll learn to ‘tap’ out of a submission and learn your limits.

I love the welcoming atmosphere. Everyone took the time to say hi and speak to me as I walked in for the first time.

The coaches spend their time watching the gaps in my technique and tailor the classes to help me, which makes me feel like they really care about my progress in the sport.

What to wear to start

  • T-shirt or rash guard
  • Shorts or leggings (no zips or buttons)
  • Mouthguard (if you have one)

Later, you’ll want to invest in a Gi (the BJJ uniform) – we’ll help you choose one.

Mat Etiquette

We keep things clean, respectful and safe:

  • No shoes on the mats
  • Wear shoes off the mats (changing room ect)
  • Wash your gear, trim your nails
  • Bow or fist-bump before and after training

These habits create a welcoming space for everyone.

“The low key, friendly, relaxed vibe keeps me coming to North Shore. A really good balance of encouraging you to get stuck in whilst also being really supportive (coaches and everyone else – really positive team supportive culture).

The friendships and community are obvious when you walk in and that makes you feel inspired to be part of it. The coaches are super focused on helping you develop skills in a way that isn’t intimidating.”
